UFC 84 [May. 25th, 2008|10:01 am]
Watched at Garth's house on 5/24/08 with Garth, Rachel, Tim and various other guests.
Lyoto Machida vs. Tito Ortiz
This was the famous Tito Ortiz's last fight with the UFC after 11 years.  Machida was billed as an "elusive" fighter, and this term became extremely clear immediately in the first round.  He ambled around, almost looking drunk, and easily ducked out of Tito's throws. Tito, on the other hand, had a bulldog stance with his head forward between his fists.  I guess this is not an uncommon stance amongst UFC fighters.  Much like a boxer, he brings his neck forward, almost perpendicular to his body and ducks his head down.  One thing I noticed is that they guys who had this stance all lost their fights last night.
At the end of the bout, Ortiz was a bloody ragdoll, while Machida (Brazilian of Japanese descent) looked as he did when he started the fight.

BJ Penn vs. Sean Sherk

This was a thematically similar fight -- a loose, flexible guy vs. many lbs of intense muscle.  Sherk was billed as a "cardio machine" as I guess it's hard for bulked up fighters to maintain their cardio endurance.  Early in the fight, it looked like he'd never run out of energy.  He had big muscles on his short frame, but his punches were like lightning.  Unfortunately, they made contact less than half the time.  The lithe in comparison Penn, however, threw fiercely accurate punches, albeit less frequently.
At some point it was apparent that Sherk had injured his right hand and was suffering.  He had at least 3 bloody cuts in his face and seemed distracted by the wounds.  Penn, like Machida, managed to make himself look downright lazy in his smoothness.  He remained stone faced throughout the fight.  Taking an opening, he took a cowering Sherk down and landed some fierce punches into his head.  In slow motion, some of the hits take on a stabbing quality.  Once a victory on Penn's side was declared, penn broke his stone face, licked his gloves and roared. Then he gave a victory speech that made Mike Tyson sound like James Earl Jones.

hello LJ [Apr. 7th, 2005|04:11 pm]
I sent in my application to the Producers Guild of America today. I included some references, but I don't know exactly how they verify my resume and my qualifications. I hope I get in. If I do, it means lots of free special screenings, free admission to films during award season (for me plus 1) and DVD screeners of Oscar contenders. Plus, the dues are tax deductible.

I also signed up for a trial subscription to IMDBpro in an effort to get my name and my credits up there for once and all.

Does anyone know how to teach a dog to heel? We've got 'sit,' 'down,' and 'stay' covered, but my dog darts all around when we go on walks. She trips me and stops cold when she wants to smells something. A trainer told me that I should talk to her the whole time we're walking, just so she can hear the sound of my voice, but I swear she doesn't care.

[info]mcgee bought me these awesome Nicole Miller sheets for Valentine's Day. I don't know why I am obsessed with them, but I think they're the best!

I just woke up from dream that was a pulp movie about a teenage doctor who was practicing medicine without a license. In the desert. In the 1950s. It was so cool. He was this young ruffian in a white t-shirt with a beat up medicine bag. My dream didn't get past the opening sequence, though, because the alarm went off just as I was thinking that I needed to see more movies by this director.

Last night, I watched two very different coming of age films: "Pretty Baby" (starring a naked, pre-pubescent Brooke Shields as a child prostitute in the Storyville sector of New Orleans, 1917) and "Kiki's Delivery Service" (a Miyazaki anime, dubbed by Kirsten Dunst and Phil Hartman among others, about a young witch in training). They were two very different movies, but they both included scenes where the protagonist belly flops onto her bed in a tantrum. Maybe I've done that once in my life, but if I did, it was just because I learned it from watching television.

Today I took my first pilates class, saw "Days of Being Wild" at the Nuart, and had Islamic Chinese food in San Gabriel. [info]mcgee, you'd like this place -- three people ate for $22.60, and there were leftovers.

I woke up in the middle of the night and walked straight into the bathroom door. Now there's a nice, painful bruise on my leg to match the one on my ass from when I slipped on the stairs. Please don't make me hold any babies this year.

Belated Happy New Year [Jan. 3rd, 2005|11:32 am]
2004 really was great for me, but it looks like 2005 could top it. I'm looking forward to hikes in runyon canyon with my dog, Debbie's wedding, taking another step closer to 30, going on some sort of vacation with the bf, contractual pay increases and maybe a first trip to NYC. I'm also going to start saving for a house.

The News in Brief [Nov. 29th, 2004|11:58 am]
I ate turkey (and duck and chicken) for the first time in at least 11 years this Thanksgiving. It was good, but I can't say that it was exciting, or that I've been missing out on something. I couldn't bring myself to eat any meat-related leftovers. What I am excited about is not being so limited in my daily meal decisions. Maybe meat will become attractive again in time.

I am going to do another limited edition t-shirt run for Christmas this year, but as with every shirt I do, I am seriously stumped about how to do the design. Year one was a combination of photocopy and drawing, year two was various photoshop filters (cut-out being predominant), and last year was half-tone. All of them featured my face.

Here are the color combinations I'm considering:
Fuschia on Army Green
Royal Blue on Army Green
Royal Blue on Baby Blue

[info]mcgee thinks I should put my name and '2004' on the shirt, but I hate when things are dated.

Does anyone know an awesome gift basket service? I guess it doesn't have to be a basket, but I want to have something delivered to my friend's office. Something nice. She's a lawyer and she did some free work for me....

work work work [Sep. 26th, 2004|11:05 am]
I haven't updated for a long time, but with good reason. I'm at work right now. Yes. On a Sunday morning. This isn't uncommon for me right now, sadly. I'm busting my ass for this job, because a) I like to consider myself a hard worker in general and b) I'm trying to negotiate a pay raise. There's also an ungodly amount of work to get done in a limited amount of time. I spend all of my time during business hours in meetings and putting out fires, so all of my paperwork has to get done on nights and weekends. They really need to pay me more.

In other news, I want a MINI Cooper.

I spent a good nine hours by myself at work yesterday, so I was soooo happy to be at my friend Jon's birthday party afterwards. It was at his boyfriend, Roy's apartment, which is a huge place a block from the Grove. Hardwood floors, decorated with Eames furniture. Just plain gorgeous. And I don't think he's paying much, because he's been there for 10 years.

Last Thursday night, my downstairs neighbors had a party that culminated in me knocking on their door and yelling at them at 3:30 am for playing bad electric guitar. This is a completely different set of neighbors than the ones I shut down the previous week for making noise after hours. I don't want to be the 'old' person in the building that needs to 'sleep' because I have a 'job.' But I am. So, anyway, some time after the debacle, loud-guitar-guy (who lives directly below me on the first floor) posts a public apology for his bad behavior by the mailboxes. Fine. But then, Matt from the third floor wrote on the apology, "Hey, no problem man! Didn't hear a peep! Invite me over for a drink next time! :)" I want to shake Matt around and tell him not to encourage guitar-guy. Especially since Matt lives on the other side of the building, and couldn't possibly be bothered by guitar guy's noise.

Anyhow, I ended up getting a fine night of sleep. Thank god I don't have to be at work at 9am.

Festivities [Aug. 15th, 2004|01:46 am]
I just got home from the awesomest birthday party at Amagi's. Check out the pictures below. Jeana, sorry I didn't get one of us and Jenny!!! I sang so many karaoke songs:

-Nothing Compares 2 U / Sinead O'Connor
-Superstar / The Carpenters
-Over at the Frankenstein Place / Soundtrack to The Rocky Horror Picture Show
-Eternal Flame / The Bangles
-Believe / Cher

It was all about good times with good friends. I even ate dinner there with my brother and his girlfriend before the singing got started. It was surprisingly good...

My Burfday [Aug. 9th, 2004|09:45 pm]
I'm not very good at keeping track of e-mail addresses. If any of you want to join me for some cheap karaoke on August 14th, I'll be at Amagi in Gower Gulch around 9pm, celebrating my 28th birthday. It's going to be a very, very low key affair. If you send me your e-mail address at dianne *at* diannemartinez *dot* com, I'll send you the Evite.

The trouble upstairs [Aug. 5th, 2004|08:18 am]
I am going to kill my new neighbors. They moved in on Sunday and have:
blocked the driveway and my own personal parking space,
constructed their ikea furniture loudly and late at night,
left all of their windows open so that when they do make noise, everyone can hear it,
played really loud music late at night (Extreme's "More than Words").

Last night was the worst, though. It sounded like they invited some friends over. Those of you who have been to my place know that I have a long hallway...They have the same layout upstairs. Apparently, they think it's funny to use it as a slip and slide. Or maybe they're running and landing on a mattress or something. This might have been going on all night. I got home at 1:30 and didn't have energy to deal with them, after already having had a talk with them about the music the other day. So I put in some earplugs and calmed my rage.

On top of all that, I've had to listen to them talk loudly about all the auditions go to. Why do I live under actors again. 20 year old actors.

Dating Show Woes [Jul. 29th, 2004|04:33 pm]
I'm working on another dating show. Anyone have any bright ideas on locations? [info]klikitat, do you know of any awesome places/bars/restaurants in Laguna/Costa Mesa/Huntington Beach that I should check out? Looks like my first shoots are going to be in that area...
